What does it mean to be British?

Some well-known British people have given us their view on what it means to them to be British. Read their thoughts and watch their videos below.

'Thinking during a race that if I win I will hear the British National Anthem at the end as I stand on the winner's rostrum is a very motivating feeling,' the Welsh cycling star tells us.

'We are in danger of losing our own identity amongst the interests, language and cultures we have embraced,' says the world-renowned percussionist.

'It is the fact that none of us has a greater claim to Britishness than any other that makes us who we are as a nation,' writes the chief executive of housing and homelessness charity Shelter.

'Above all, being British is an exceedingly mundane matter,' says Dr Tim Edensor, reader in Cultural Geography at Manchester Metropolitan University. Do you agree?
